How to mail the Certificate of Amendment to the Secretary of State
Change Corporation Name Add commentsPart 5
Ok, after you have held the meeting of the board, you are almost done with the process of changing the name of your corporation.
To complete the process, you have to submit the 3 signed Certificate of Amendment to the Secretary of State.
Here is how you do it:
The Secretary of State wants you to create a cover letter with all of your contact information when you submit the Certificate of Amendment to them.
They want you to include your current corporation name, your name, your return address and a the best number to reach you if they needed to.
They also want to receive a paid self-addressed envelope which they will use to mail your certified copies of the filed Certificate of Amendment.
We have prepared a cover sheet you can use to submit your Certificate of Amendment
Download it by clicking on this link:

Mailing the Certificate of Amendment
Now that you have all of the pieces together, it’s just a matter of mailing everything to the Secretary of State.
Here is a list of the items you have to mail:
1- The cover sheet that includes your contact information.
2- The 3 signed original copies of the Certificate of Amendment.
3- A copy of your original certified articles of incorporation. (This helps the Secretary of State find your corporation and speeds up the process)
3- A check for $30.00 (at this time) payable to the Secretary of State. If you deliver the package in person, you have to pay an extra $15.00 as a “handling fee” also payable to the Secretary of State. This other fee, needs to be paid on a separate check though. (You might want to take a look at the current fee by downloading the certificate of amendment instructions from the Secretary of State…Please refer to part #1 of this series, how to change the name of a California Corporation.)
4- A self addressed paid envelope.
Mail your package to this address:
Secretary of State
Document Filing Support Unit
1500 11th Street, 3rd Floor, Sacramento, CA 95814
The time it takes the Secretary of State to process your amendment will be from three to four weeks. Now you just have to wait until the Secretary of State successfully processes your Certificate of Amendment and mail you the certified copies.
