Yesterday I was attacked by trojan called Generic Fake!htm while I was downloading some trial software I needed.

The trojan was making my web-browser go to pages in an attempt sell me an anti-virus. Interesting concept right? The virus trying to sell me an antivirus… :)

My computer is currently protected with McAfee Total Protection or at least that’s what I thought. Even with the so called “protection” of my anti-virus, the trojan created an entry in the registry of my computer. Eventhough I did a full system scanned with McAfee to try to remove the trojan, my computer was till infected.

How To Easily Remove A Trojan

This is not the first time my computer gets infected by a trojan, and while in the past I had to do a complete system installation (WipeOut!) I tried to come up with a more practical solution this time.

Removing a trojan is easy when you follow this instructions:

Do a System Restore to removed any late entries in your computer registry that are making your computer act silly and remove the trojan/virus(es) by following this steps:

  1. In Windows XP… Go to Start , Programs, Accessories, System, and then click on System Restore.
  2. Make sure the radio button “Restore my computer to an earlier time” is checked then click on the “next” button.
  3. A calendar will be displayed showing you the “restoration points” that are available to you.
  4. Choose a restoration point prior to the suspected date of the attack of the trojan. (A week prior to the attack would be a good point.)Click on the desired system restoration date on the calendar and then click on “next
  5. On the “Confirm Restore Point Selection” click on “next” and your computer will start the system restore process and restart your computer.
  6. Scan your computer by one or at least two of the following online scanners:

    http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
    http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
    http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml

  7. Download anti-virus and fully scan your PC for malicious files. If you don’t want to pay for an antivirus, you can download AVG free of charge.
  8. Downloaad and scann your computer from malware using this free software:

    MalwareBytes ( http://www.malwarebytes.org/ )

  9. Use the following online vulnerability scanner and to detect any other security flaw in your computer: http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/?task=load
  10. Update all passwords for your online accounts (banking, e-mail, etc) as this information could have been compromised.

Hopefully by now your computer is free of viruses or trojans, but if the damages were too severe, you might have to do a complete system installation. This would be your last option.
